SRAM & MRAM Group, a United Kingdom-based business conglomerate has proposed to set up this fab, on request of Chief Minister Shri Naveen Patnaik. This project will provide direct employment to 5,000 skilled and semi-skilled people. It will also generate 3,000 indirect employment.
India has a dependency on China, Taiwan, Korea, etc for its semiconductor chips which are used in equipment ranging from washing machines to airplanes. Once this manufacturing unit starts rolling out chips, work on several types of machinery waiting for semiconductor chips will gain speed without foreign dependency. In this unit, the semiconductor company will design and fabricate printed circuit boards, collaborate with product companies to assemble and also try to design and develop its own R&D center, a release said.
