The Tata Group has initiated discussions with Taipei's Wistron Corp to buy its manufacturing facility in Karnataka. Wistron Corp is one of the three top vendors for Apple in India. The whole deal is of Rs 4,000-5,000 crore as per a source familiar to the discussion. Obviously Tata Group is keen to extend and strengthen their presence in Indian Semiconductor Ecosystem. Tata Electronics Pvt Ltd (TEPL) is wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Sons and is already a components vendor for iPhones. There is also another plan to deal with other large manufacturers from Korea and Japan.
The Tata Group declined to comment on this and according to sources aware of the whole process the group is really keen and to workout on this plan. If the buyout plan doesn't work they might move forward with joint venture.
